Addison stayed a small farm town of a few hundred people until the 1970s, when legalized alcohol sales and low property taxes turned it into a restaurant-and-hotel destination almost overnight — the population went from under 600 in 1970 to over 5,500 by 1980 and nearly 12,000 by 2000.
